This kind of old mattress cover was used in traditional Europe in many cultures, in houses with wooden beds and filled with straw. The fabric is made of home-grown hemp, hand-spun and woven on a cotton yarn warp. Two weaving widths have been finely hand-sewn together with rustic stitches of white cotton yarn.  It is tightly home-woven in twill in a quality of (11 x 10 tr/cm. The red weft stripes are of cotton yarn.
